How to Get Around in Kunming

Kunming China is one of the loveliest places to visit, for traditional culture and pristine nature. And since exploration is the key to any holiday in Kunming, the town offers an excellent network of public transport. Read on and you will see just how easy getting around the city is.

1. The Subway System in Kunming

Plans are underfoot or already in effect (at the time of writing this article) for the city to be set up with 9 subway lines. Lines 1, 2, 3 and 6 have been in operation for some time and pass a number of transit points such as the Changshui Airport, the Kunming Railway Station, the East Coach Station and the South Railway Station. Arm yourself with a subway map and you can plan all your travels along these lines. Choosing to stay at a hotel in the heart of Kunming will be a very convenient option with many such as Grand Park Kunming, offering promotions and good rates to choose from while being close to the subway stations.

2. Taking the City Bus in Kunming

Kunming boasts over 100 bus lines which give the area an extensive coverage. Besides, costs are stupendously low, with a full city ride costing as low as 1 Yuan (at the time of writing this article). Most of the bus services operating within the city are on a self-service basis. Hence, you need to have the correct change in hand. Also, remember to enter from the front door and get off the bus from the rear door. Busses run until late in the night, with the last shift generally leaving by around 11.30 pm. • No 100. Heads past Daguan Park, the Kunming Stadium, the East Gate of Cuihu Park and the zoo
• No 101. Travels past Yuantong Temple, the Yunnan University, Cuihu Park and the Kunming Stadium.

Set yourself up at a central city hotel in Kunming and travelling to the most iconic attractions will turn out to be a breeze. By the way, remember to stand close to the door, indicating to the driver you are getting off at the next stop. Or else he may not stop.

3. Taxi Hires in Kunming

Taxies are available at any time of the day, with a night service in operation from 10 pm to 6 am the next day. Ideal for heading back to your Kunming hotel if you have been partying into the wee hours of the morning; taxi fares are determined by distance, calculated on a kilometre rate in blocks, there is also a fuel fee per ride which is generally around CNY 1 per ride. Waiting fees too are applicable, as is a start-up fee.

4. Car Rentals in Kunming

Gather as much information about driving in Kunming before you decide to rent a car. Rental prices vary depending on the type and size of the vehicle you hire. Vehicles without a driver require a deposit, which can be around 5000 yuan. But not necessary if you opt for a chauffeur driven vehicle, which is the recommended option since these drivers are also excellent tour guides.

5. Cycle Rentals in Kunming

Gaining popularity, cycle rentals in Kunming are favoured amongst hostel guests and even families opting to explore the city in a leisurely manner. There are many places around the city offering cycle rentals with costs varying between new and used bicycles.
